In an increasingly fast-paced, digital-first world, it’s not surprising that many gym operators feel alone in tackling challenges. Meanwhile, others are facing the same hurdles.
Steadfast in the belief that knowledge is power, and when it’s shared it becomes unstoppable, the Xplor Gym team embarked on a research project to uncover the realities of running a fitness business today.
All with the aim of helping gym operators across the UK to benchmark their business and gain a fresh perspective in doing so.

3 biggest challenges uncovered
Amongst dozens of findings, 3 common challenges emerged from the research:
Costs keep going up – 90% of UK gym operators surveyed said that operating costs have increased year-over-year. Payroll & staff wage bills top the list of costs that have gone up. Closely followed by business rates/tax bills and cleaning & sanitation supplies
Time is scarce – this came up repeatedly in the research, operators are time poor and working with limited resources. For example, 38% of those selling memberships in person/by phone lack the resources to chase leads and 25% of those not using email aren’t as they don’t have time to write emails
Competition is fierce – Three quarters of gym operators surveyed face local competition and over half have had new clubs open nearby recently. More often than not, these operators are left fighting for the same members
While some of the findings uncovered in the report are surprising, much will be very familiar to most. And the good news is that many of the biggest challenges can be easily overcome with the right approach.
